Information: ClassiQuest
has presented a number of Mr. Loeb's recordings. Many mix Western and Eastern
instruments in fascinating combinations and sound-worlds and this disc is no different.
The Prelude for Two Consorts is composed for the two Early Music Ensembles
listed above. Rivermist in Summer is for khaen, a Laotian-Thai mouth organ.
Fantasia on Pyong-si-jo No. 2 is for traditional instruments but based
on the same Korean melody as No. 1 in this series. The Meeting of Sea and Clouds
was inspired by a trip off the Majorcan coast. Two Views of the Silent Waterfall
describes a waterfall in a remote part of Ohara, the north end of Kyoto. Riddles
is written for solo bass koto and finally, a work of traditional sound world by
this composer in the Quartet. Among Mr. Loeb's many awards
are prizes from the Viola da Gamba Societies of the UK, US and Japan, and from
the Andres Segovia Centennial Competition in Spain. David Loeb's thesis on Japanese
koto music was published by Columbia University Press.
