Information:
The Sixth World Symposium on Choral Music took place in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, August 3-10, 2002. It was the Symposium's first appearance in the United States and it will not return for years to come.
The event was hosted by the Minnesota chapter of the American Choral Directors Association and was the largest to date. The 1,615 delegates hailed from 70 countries. Over 2,000 singers gave an unprecedented total of 88 performances in eight days. All the paid concerts were sold out and the free ones had standing room only, even at venues accommodating up to 3,000 people.
This was the first of these symposiums to commission new choral works. Ten renowned composers from the Americas wrote 4-minute a capella choruses in a variety of languages. American names included Moses Hogan, Libby Larsen, Stephen Paulus, Chen Yi and Dominick Argento.
Lectures were presented by the likes of Helmut Rilling, John Rutter and Bobby McFerrin.
This event touched many in ways hard to evaluate and its impact in the choral world cannot be overestimated. These discs are a wonderful sampling of the riches in music, languages, styles and cultures this symposium offered.
