The spirit of invention has distinguished mankind throughout recorded history; the art of music is one of the more sublime and universal manifestations of this impulse. The concept of invention, of course, can be interpreted in multifarious ways, depending upon whether one is referring to the actual formation of tones into meaningful structures (composition) or to the creation of media through which these ideas are articulated (a domain of engineering). What a unique opportunity, therefore, that the two modes may meet in the union of German master composer Johann Sebastian Bach and the Belgian instrument designer Adolphe Sax. Bach is renowned for fusing disparate international musical styles through dazzling contrapuntal technique, consequently encapsulating the mature Baroque era in his oeuvre. Sax, on the other hand, made improvements to the bass clarinet, laid the groundwork for the euphonium, and patented his seminal invention, the saxophone, in 1846.
