Information:
Three Mats make up the TrioMats. Mats Zetterqvist is the former leader of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and is a visiting leader of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Mats Widlund has appeared as soloist all over the globe and has recorded the piano music of Hilding Rosenberg on Daphne. Mats Rondin has not only performed with all the top Swedish and many European orchestras, he has also turned to conducting in the last few years.
This disc, despite its earlier catalogue number, is the second recording by the TrioMats. Here they perform four contemporary Swedish composer's works written for their medium.
Anders Nilsson's work is really a set of three dances. His music is accessible and fun; perky and lyrical.
Sven-David Sandstrom studied under Ingvar Lidholm. He has held University Composition posts in Sweden and at Indiana University. His stern, complex style of the '80s underwent a changeover to a more tonal language having much in common with the Romantic tradition. The work recorded here grew organically into a form that is rhapsodic, with grand gestures, crescendos and climaxes. It is strongly influenced by the tonal language of Brahms.
Johan Jeverud's piece comes from his early '90s collection headed Chamber Music Book, Chapters 1-4. The music is free-flowing and improvisatory in nature, but still with plenty of rhythmic energy.
Gosta Hansson is self-taught and spent much time in basic seclusion. Performances of his music were strictly local. He composed this piece for the TrioMats and it displays astonishing maturity and familiarity with the instruments at hand. Both the Jeverud and the Hansson are PREMIERE RECORDINGS.
