Information:
This album is a compilation of unaccompanied choral works by Hans Gal & Jean Berger. These composers, though probably unknown to each other, were both Jewish refugees who fled Hitler's Germany in 1933. Gal settled in Scotland and Berger in the USA. Both composers employ a chromatic tonal harmonic language akin to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, though each developed a distinctive personal style and harmonic palette.
The music of both composers was frequently performed during the peak of their public careers, and while a handful of Berger's choral works remain in the repertory, none of Gal's choral works and few of Berger's are available on record. In fact, this may certainly be the frst recording of Gal's choral output.
The Buck County Choral Society has a number of recordings under their belt. It is a 20-voice group drawn from a larger 90-voice choir. The Society is in its 33rd season. Thomas Lloyd has recorded on the Albany label and teaches at Haverford College outside Philadelphia.
