Patricia McCarty has scored big here. Right out of release this reocridng is being
praise. ClaissToday.com has given it a 10/10, its highest rating. Here is some
of that review: Telemann's 12 Fantasias for solo violin
are wonderful, exceptionally well crafted works that consistently engage the listener's
interest because of their buoyant melodic character, inventive counterpoint, and
catchy, playful rhythms. And technically, although requiring an accomplished player,
they are in an entirely different league of accessibility than, say, the celebrated
solo-violin works of Bach. ......As for the transcriptions, it's a simple matter
of transposing the original violin notes a fifth lower, which, while changing
the key, is necessary to maintain the string and fingering relationships that
make the music possible to play. It's hard to believe that any listener wouldn't
be perfectly happy to hear these delightful pieces resounding in the uniquely
rich, warm, vibrant viola timbre and register, especially as realized in McCarty's
full-bodied expressive style. There's really nothing to fault here--it's simply
great music-making complemented by ideal sound. A terrific disc!
